Traces of war and memory
Immerse yourself in the history of Alsace through a day combining chronicles, nature and traditions. Visit the Hartmannswillerkopf site, with its national monument, its preserved trenches and the Historial. End this day with a meal in a traditional inn, followed by a final immersion in the past.
As you climb the Route des Crêtes, stop at the Silberloch pass. Along the road, there is a large free car park serving the site of the Hartmannswillerkopf, or Vieil-Armand. This summit is a former battlefield from the First World War.
Start your day by discovering the preserved trenches. Since 2014, the Hartmannswillerkopf battlefield has offered an immersive experience thanks to a marked trail. Once the trenches have been discovered, return to your starting point to explore the Franco-German History Museum.
The museum features exhibits, archival materials, historical artifacts and interactive displays that tell the story of the fighting, soldiers and living conditions during the war.
For lunch, enjoy a marcaire menu on the heights of the Crêtes à la Freundstein Farm Inn.
For your afternoon, go to theUffholt Memorial Shelterz. Explore art and historical reflection in this former shelter that features exhibits on memory, citizenship and peace.
